Ask Cap'N
Dear Capt'n
On what parts of my body is it most important to wear sunscreen when I swim? Do I really need to wear sunscreen at all??
-Bare and Burnin
Bare and Burnin’,
Sunscreen should be applied to protect the sensitive skin and psyche of the Coyote Masters Swimmers. Sun block keeps the number of dermatologist visits down and allocates money for your our own kids’ college costs. There a couple of things to be aware of while using sun block. First, use the SPF that works for you (50 in may case since I can look translucent during most of the year) and not use oils like many of us did in our bullet proof youth. Secondly, you want to avoid the social disasters of applying sunscreen to your team mates during indoor swim meets like we’ve seen at previous Las Vegas meets from teams that hale from Long Beach. Eeeewe.
As far as what parts of your body are most important to cover, it’s a matter of alignment with suit coverage. For those that love public displays and sport a banana hammock (mostly males, I hope), you should consider having sun block applied with an air gun. For the women who wear the highly revealing technical suits (see my posters of Natalie Coughlin), paint rollers would suffice. For those of us that are more conservative, apply using the traditional hand method until you need a spouse to cover the back. If a spouse or offspring is not available, please ask the referee to help with the hard to reach areas.
Warmest thoughts to you in the new year!
